system became very slow

Hello,

I've 20 systems in my network. server is win 2000 server. Clients
are XP Prof.
5 of the clients became very slow. In order to open My Computer, I need
to wait 5 minutes. Every window is like that.

I've installed McAfee internet security suite and virus scan. Updated
the definitions also. After scan its showing no virus found. My hard
disk space is still above 10 GB free.

Why is it slow? CPU usage sometimes going to 100% and falling to 4%.

Can anybody suggest a solution?

Clear out the TEMP files and the IE/FireFox cache - many times when
using Roaming Profiles you will experience what you describe when the
users Profile is larger than 100MB.

You also don't need MC Internet Security on the local nodes, that's what
a real firewall appliance does for you, and you don't have the
performance issues if you protect the devices at the proper location.

Have you looked at the performance under the admin tools? If you know what
you're doing, it's a great tool and will tell you where your performance is
lacking. Also be sure to check in the task manager, often it will tell you
what applications is taking up all the resources.

Was it slow before you installed mcafee? If you recently installed that
program, that's most likely the cause.

I would first recommend looking at the performance tab until Admin Tools and
task manager and determine what program is taking up all your resources.

Most likely you're CPU and memory is in good shape. Some antivirus programs
can do that.

Also check your paging file (it's a hidden os file). This can cause
performance problems if it's too large or in a fragmented hard drive. It can
be moved to any NTFS hard drive on your network.

Hope this helps or gives you a place to start from.

Does it happen when booted into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with networking?? If
that fixes it you seem to have some startup/logon process causing the
problem and may be able to pinpoint the culprit using msconfig using
selective startup. If the computers are members of an Active Directory
domain verify that they have correct DNS configuration in that they only
point to domain controllers for DNS in tcp/ip properties. Also check the
logs via Event Viewer to see if anything helpful is recorded as a
warning/error that may give a clue.
