i have a pc with windows xp home edition and a license for
it. can i use windows nt4 server with this same license?
if i have the latest windows( say windows 2003 server) can
i use all other windows(windows 95/98/nt/2000/xp) that
came before it? help me please

Hi,

No, a license is specific to the operating system. They are not
interchangable. The possession of a license for WinXP Home permits you to
use WinXP Home and only WinXP Home. They are not retrograde to previous
systems.

Hi,

For ANY operating system to be installed, you MUST have a license specific
to that operating system. They are not, in any way, shape, or form,
interchangable.

There are some instances of operating system with downgrade rights,
but these would only apply to comparable versions. For example a
license for Windows XP Pro that included downgrade rights would allow
you to run Windows 2000 Workstation instead of XP Pro but not Windows
2000 Server.

See
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...4d-4a6d-aed9-f2c1f8f23e14/downgrade_chart.doc
for information about which licenses do include downgrade rights and
what exactly these downgrade rights provide for.

It appears that other than the multiple license programs the only
operating system that includes downgrade rights is the OEM version of
Windows XP Pro.

Good luck

Hi Bruce,

That link is dead, might want to check it. I don't get the impression that
this user is using a volume license, but rather is looking to see if one
license will allow installations of other products.

It is legal to "downgrade" a WinXP Pro OEM license as well (but not
Home, and not a retail version of Pro either).

From the "Downgrade Rights Chart" found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/LICENSING/resources/volbrief.asp

<quote>
System licenses acquired via the OEM channel follow rights granted in the OEM
license. PCs licensed for Windows XP Professional OEM are licensed to use
identified previous versions of Windows Operating System Product(s) in lieu of
Windows XP Professional (Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft
Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft® Windows 98 (Second Edition).

Note this from the "Windows OEM EULA Changes" at the same Web page:

<quote>
If you choose this option, neither Microsoft nor the PC Manufacturer is
obligated to supply you with copies of previous versions and neither Microsoft
nor the PC Manufacturer is responsible to provide product support for PCs on
which these previous versions are installed.

The only concession on Windows licenses, is that if you have a retail
Win XP Pro (and this *might* also apply to Win2003), then you can use
that license in support of a 'downgrade' install of Win2000 or Win NT,
not installing the XP. This earlier system would be installed using the
key that came with it - it really is applicable where there is a
business with Win2000 machines already - buying new and wanting a
single system to be Win2000 at the moment

Hi

Correction: This does not apply to the retail version Win XP Pro, but
the OEM version.
