Windows XP and NT

We are still running Windows NT Server 4.0 for our
network. We have just aquired a new PC with Windows XP
Pro pre-loaded. Are there any concerns with Windows XP
Pro joining an NT Server environment?

We also have a mixture of client stations. Some are
running NT 4.0 Worstation, some are running 98 and some
are running 2000 Pro. I know it seems crazy but we are in
the middle of an upgrade process. Will introducing XP Pro
to an already mish-mashed network cause any serious
network issues??

Hi, Mike -

The server needs to be running Service Pack 6a - other
than that minor issue you shouldn't have any problems at
all.

Hope this helps -

Good, thank you.

One more question if you don't mind. As I stated earlier
we have quite a "quilt" of OS's on our network and since
we introduced 2000 Pro, there has been some significant
slow down. The wierd thing is that it only happens on a
few systems and on certain files. Some of the 98 stations
experience this but not all and all of the 2000 Pro's do
as well. None of the WKstation systems seem to be
affected. I thought this could just be network traffic at
its max. Any ideas??

It could be network traffic - are they slow browsing the
network or just slow transferring files?

I run a mixed win9x,winnt network and just dropped XPpro in the middle...

had to get rid of Netbeui (netbeui/Tcp/ip mix was unstable)

winXP wanted to be the master browser (disable)

no major headaches but a little time spent tweaking :>

There is a slight delay when browsing however, that time
is never significant enough to be considered a problem.
The major slow downs seem to be opening Acad 2000 files
and sometimes our Access database runs slow as well.

So to answer your question, definetly during file
transfer. Its difficult to pinpoint because it doesn't
happen all the time.

Then I guess network congestion would be my first guess.
How many machines (give or take) are on the affected
network segment?

Since got rid of Netbeui and using only tctip, does XP have the slow folder browsing issue over the network when you try to open folder with a lot of files

Thank

Stephane
