Using NT Server 4.0 with Windows XP workstations

Task: using Windows Explorer at workstation to look at a
server folder with 5,ooo small files.

Windows XP-Pro and Windows 2000 take 20 seconds to display
list.

Windows 98 SE and Windows XP-Home only take 1 second to
display list.

We have other network speed issues associated with databse
queries that take much longer with the XP-Pro workstations.

We are fine with our NT Server 4.0. Is there something
that can be done with the network speed issue between the
NT 4.0 Server and the Windows XP-Pro workstation?

This may be the remote computer schedule task scanning that 2K and XP does
when communicating with network computers or servers. You can disable this
function by doing the following:

Open up the Registry and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that, select the key:

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it.

This is the key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. You
can export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.
This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost
immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing
processes.
