i have my hard drives all partitioned, and i recently had to reinstall
windows one one and format it.
i have windows working but i cannot update it, i think this is because it
hasn't asked me to activate it.
the problem is where the activate link in the start menu is supposed to be,
its not there. i have tried searching for this file but it isn't on my
computer?
any way in which i can get around this and update my computer somehow?
my sound card and graphics card wont work unless i do this so to save loads
of hassle it would help.
thanks.

Go to Start->Run and enter : oobe/msoobe /a

you can also use:
c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe /a (change C if you installed Windows on a
different partition)

and hit OK

If you do not have an Activate Windows item on the Start Menu then
that usually indicates that your installed Windows XP is one that does
not require activation. This is most commonly encountered with two
different versions of Windows XP:

1. BIOS Locked OEM versions. These versions are self-activating if
they are installed on a computer with a motherboard BIOS from the same
computer manufacturer/assembler that produced the OEM install CD.

2. Volume licensed versions. These versions do not require
activation. Volume licensees are subject to on-site audits of their
licensing compliance.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
