Is there really no way for an individual to obtain and run the 64-bit
edition without buying a very expensive MSDN subscription? Is Microsoft
really forcing me to run only Linux on my new AMD Athlon 64 PC? I feel
like I must be reading the Microsoft materials wrong here. Does anyone
know of an appropriate solution?

Thanks

Hi Shep,

Maybe someone will know how you can purchase the 64-bit OS, but let me
mention that the OSs in MSDN subscriptions are for development and testing
only.

It's not currently available for sale as a stand alone product and it is
currently only available on systems with the Intel Itanium processor.

I have no information on when it may be available for the AMD platform
though given that AMD now has retail 64-bit systems, I would assume it will
be available on such systems in the not too distant future. However, it's
quite likely that it won't be sold stand alone either.

I don't believe the current XP 64-bit version will run on the AMD platform
so MSDN access would not get you what you are seeking anyway.

The current 64 bit edition is only for Intel Itanium; the Athlon 64 bit
edition is not yet available outside Beta test. A new Athlon 64 bit
machine is likely to be using the cpu variant which also runs 32 bit
code, and which will run regular 32 bit XP to go on with
