windows won't start

B

Beth

Every since the computer automatically downloaded an update (software
distribution service 3.0), windows will not start. The first screen comes on
for a while then goes to blank. I have tried to restore but that does not
work. I would appreciate any help.

Yes, I can start in Safe Mode but not sure how to uninstall update. I looked
in Add/Remove and did not see it there.

Hi Beth,

Do you have a Partition / Drive Image to fall back on? This works better
than relying on System Restore.

If you don't it might be cheaper and faster to reformat and reinstall
Windows XP. If you don't have a secondary Hard Drive, now might be a good
time to buy one and install one, and install Windows XP on that Hard Drive,
so you don't have to lose your Documents, E-mails and Favorites, as well as
your Address Book.

When you open 'Add or Remove' put a checkmark in 'Show updates'.

Do not use System Restore, which cannot remove an individual update.

so if you have any non microsoft
av's or firewalls, then you might
simply uninstall them temporarily.

they are likely blocking sds 3.0.

and retry booting in normal mode
windows.

also, there use to be
free technical support
directly from microsoft
involving updates.

but i guess they moved
individual support to a
public forum:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

the above will provide similar
postings to yours and perhaps
you will find a solution.

but if not, then you can
create a new post with
your initial question to
that ng.

Did you try System Restore in Safe Mode?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hope this helps.

That did it! Thank you so much. I uninstalled the av and the computer
started just fine. I did have it freeze up once when I was reinstalling but
I just repeated the process and everything seems to be working just fine. I
appreciate the help.

you're welcome.

btw: you should spend
a little time to look into
the system restore
feature, as it should
have been functional.
