WindowsXP, AMD Athlon 2000+ 1.67 GHz processor, 1GB ram was working fine,
but after the recent Windows updates hangs on the "windows is now shutting
down" screen. It never turns off. I have to hit the power button to get it
to shut down. Is there something I can do to correct this?

I tried several of the suggestions listed on this site and nothing
worked--then I noticed that the latest update to this site was February
2005!!!! In my original post I mentioned that these problems started after
the very most recent Windows Update, which took place only a week or two
ago. There were seven updates at one time. My computer has been running
smoothly for a couple of years and now it won't shut down. I think sending
people to link that is almost two years old is rather pointless and
frustrating. Any of the fixes listed on this site obviously would have no
bearing on problems caused by the recent Windows Update.
