Windows won't boot up on start

This may be similar problem to the one Larry is having in the next post. I
went to start my computer this morning and got the message, "Apologies for
any inconvenience, but Windows did not start properly the last time ... etc",
gave me the list of options (Last known good, normally, safe mode and so on)
and the one with the countdown and none of them work. Each time I go to
start it, it gets as far as the main XP Screen (the one with the dotted blue
line moving left to right along the screen) and starts all over again with
the apologies message (not BSOD). This is the same for Safe Mode.
Any suggestions please? It was working fine last night when I turned it off
and I have not downloaded anything nor installed any software or hardware.
Thanks.
