Windows Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) Missing?

J

Joe

I recently tried to install Delta Force: Black Hawk Down
and I get a error message when I try to install.

16 bit Windows Subsystem

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose "Close" to terminate the application.

I checked the Novalogic support side and I found this.

PROBLEM:
When installing Delta Force - Black Hawk Down, I get a
Win16 subsystem/ 16-bit Windows subsystem error.

RESOLUTION:
Critical files that are needed to enable the operation of
the Windows Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) 16-bit subsystem
are missing or corrupt on your Microsoft® Windows XP, NT
4.0, or 2000 computer. Because of this, your computer
will not be able to run 16-bit utilities, such as the
Black Hawk Down installer, that require Windows NTVDM. To
resolve this issue, contact your computer manufacturer or
Microsoft® www.microsoft.com. For more information, refer
to Microsoft knowledge base articles Q222975 and Q165214
on Microsoft's Web site.

I would suggest you go to Start/Run and type in "wjview" without the quotes.
This will tell you which version of Microsoft's Virtual Machine you have
running on your system, if any.

Java VM for all OS's should be available through Windows Update. See MS
Security Bulletin MS03-011, Flaw in Microsoft VM Could Enable System
Compromise (816093)

If you need to install a previous Build first before installing the patch,

then:

For Microsoft Java VM, Build 3809:

Java VM for all OS's except Win2k The file msjavwu.exe, available here:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/File_store/msjavwu.exe to be used instead
of msjavx86.exe is an MS VM updated to Version 3809 for non-Win2k users.

He is talking about the virtual DOS machine, it has nothing to do with Java.

Have you tried running the system file checker? Open a command prompt and
type "SFC /SCANNOW". It is strange that Half-Life would give that error
since it is not a DOS game.

Hey
Some older installers do make use of 16bit processes during setup. If you
open c:\windows\system32\config.nt with notepad - under all the lines
prefixed 'REM' do you have the following or anything else listed?

dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
files=40

Has anyone been able to correct this problem? Its kind of
odd that this happens with quite a few items. Like Half-
Life and a few other programs.
[]

That is odd...Half Life is opengl (or dx..slower) and 32 bit,
do you have a legacy sound card installed? Soundblaster
ISA for example? Make sure your BIOS is set to automatic
for PnP cards and PCI preferred. Sometimes folks enter
the BIOS and place a slot/section under PnP devices as
ISA...which would muck things up on PCI cards. Also if
you put sound card in wrong PCI slot (near board edge)
some of those PCI slots are "shared" with the ISA bus.

You could try installing or running the game in compatibility
mode for Win98 or Win95, Also check if you have latest
"compatibility" files for software/games at MS update.
