Windows Version.

DB.

I have two computers, both running Windows XP Home. Winver tells me
they both have just the same Version, SP, etc.
Computer (1) has these details in the bottom RH corner of the
screen - Comp. (2) does not.. How do I get them to show on the screen of
Comp. (2), please?
Comp.(2) was previously owned by Bill Bloggs and Winver tells me:
"This product is licensed.....to Bill Bloggs". Is there any way I might
change that to my name?
Bill's name comes up unexpectedly from time to time in various
places. Is it held in any single place to which I might have easy
access with a view to changing it to mine?

None of this is of great importance, of course - I'm just curious to
know! TIA of any replies.

Tweak UI, general category, mark the last option. Tweak UI is available
from:
http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/system_resources_tune_up/tweakui133.exe
Right-click the TweakUI .inf file and select install. Should a notice
appear saying a disk is required, click OK and another screen appears. Click
browse, go to the folder containing Tweak and click OK and OK.

Open the registry editor (regedit.exe) and do a search on "Bill Bloggs" (do
not include the quote marks). When you find such an entry, right click it,
chose modify and enter your name. Some programs may contain Bill's name and
you will have to live with that unless you can find specific directions on
how to remove it.

Ron Badour has already told you how to do this, so I won't add
anything except for asking why you want to do this.

Ron has already told you how to do this too, but here I want to add an
important point. You say it's not of "great importance," But I think
it definitely is.

If I acquired a used computer, no matter who previously owned it, the
first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating
system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained,
what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and
spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody
else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddy porn, etc., and I
wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

But if you just want to change the "Registered to" name, you can do so
by editing HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOwner with Regedit.

A little difference from a computer to a used car. You cannot compare the two. If
you want to compare a computer as you did then try one wife to another. Then you
know what a used computer can be.

"Can be" is the thing. Buying a used computer should not create so much fear
that a reformat and reload is
paramount.
