Windows Upgrade

Can you perform a Windows XP upgrade if you already have Windows XP
installed? I want to install some windows files but keep all my personal
items. I'm getting the Stop Error blue screen, windows will not boot. I think
my lsass.exe or csrss.exe file might be missing.
Thanks.

You need to know the difference on performing an upgrade or a repair
install. You can only perform an upgrade with a retail (ie:
Microsoft boxed version) of XP.

With most versions of XP, you can boot the CD and perform a repair re-
install on top of the installed version.

Can you tell me how to get the file lsass.exe to startup normally in Windows
XP? I hooked the hard drive up to another PC and transferred the file
lsass.exe to windows path manually. Now how do I get windows to recognize the
file and boot normally?

Not enough information.

Do you mean you want to know if it is possible to upgrade from XP Home
to XP Pro? If not, what exactly is it you are wanting to do? What do you
mean by "some windows files?"

Also, what is this stop error? Please also do the following:

Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer

Search for recent errors. Double-click on the error. Click on the copy
button. Now you can paste this information in your next post.

Why do you think lsass.exe or csrss.exe may be missing? Don't you see
them in C:\WINDOWS\system32?

Neil had the right idea on a repair install. That is what I meant to say, not
an upgrade.

I cannot even log onto windows. Everytime I boot my PC, a blue screen comes
up right before the User Login and says, "Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
Logon Process System Process terminated unexpectadly with a status of.... "

Before this happened, I was removing viruses. I think that through the task
mananger, the lsass.exe file was ended, which might be the cause to my blue
screen.

I connected the HD up to another PC and copied the lsass.exe file onto the
windows/system32 folder, but I still get the blue screen upon boot.

I tried neils advice with the repair, but I did not have that option on the
partition, only a clean install. So i had the cancel the process.

Since you said you were removing viruses (plural), I wonder if your
system is compromised to the point that a *clean* (not repair) install
is warranted.

Have you seen this "How to troubleshoot a "STOP 0xC000021A" error":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669

Have you tried using the last known good configuration?

On the page Neil gave you, did you see Warning 2 (the one if the Repair
option is not available)? There are two fixes mentioned. Did you try
either of these?

Whether you perform a clean install or a repair install, you would be
wise to copy the data off the hard drive first. This will mean you will
either need to physically remove it from your PC or you can try booting
off a live Linux CD. Hopefully you have an external hard drive.
