My computer used to let me know when new updates have
been downloaded, but now it doesnt. I went into update
page at microsoft and found there were about 42 critical
updates dating way back. What do you think is wrong?
thanks

.

Right-click My Computer and select Windows Update tab.
Chose which of the 3 options you require from there.

Hi, Sharon,

Right click "My Computer". Select 'Automatic Updates' and enable.

However, with what you describe, it will be better to go to the Microsoft
downloads/updates page and let them scan your PC for suggested updates. You
can read about these and select those you want. Depending on your
connection, it can be a long job, so I suggest you download and install just
a few at a time, working down the list.

The first one to install is SP1 - if you don't already have it. This will
take care of a lot of the missing patches etc.

Finally, make sure you have no open programmes running - except, of course,
IE and maybe your firewall.

Hope this helps.

Sharon, your realization that you had a gap in your computer security came
at an opportune time, for now all the critical/security updates, 40+ of
them, have been collected into one large bunch --- with all its implied
advantages --- called Rollup 1 (KB926939). This was posted on the Windows
update site only about two weeks ago.
