windows updates

how do i know which updates are good for my pc or not have had trouble with
one update and couldn't access user accounts, removed it and it all works but
it took me ages to find/work it out. any advice. have now changed it to
inform me of updates but do nothing else.

Control Panel > Automatic Updates. You will find the options you require.
