Windows updates on a Windows 2000 network

Derek Peters

Hi thanks for looking at my post.

I was asked to look a windows 2000 network with one server and 5
workstations that are running very slow at times.

It turned out to be that when Microsoft had Windows updates on there site
the server & any workstation that was turned on would try to download the
updates.

Now the network has just one modem (56K) and all the workstations get
internet and Email via the server. There is no broadband in the town.

So a 3 Meg download no becomes an 18 Meg download for all the computers.

All the computers are turned off each night so I have asked them to leave
the server on overnight Monday to Thursday and then turn it off at the
Weekend; this should at least keep the server up to date (they are on a
fixed price for internet 24 hours a day)

Is it possible to have the server downloading the upgrades once and the
workstations get the upgrades from the server?

Can I set the server to download the updates at night, So the workstations
are upgraded first thing in the morning when switch on?

Have I got this totally wrong and there is a far better way of handling the
Updates?

Many thanks for your time

Derek

Download and install Software Update Services on the server.
Download the wuau.adm template as well. Use group policy to
configure the clients to pull updates from the server.

Hi - isn't it "not recommended" to install SUS on a DC/server with other
roles? I know you can't do it on a server running Exchange....I think that
souped-up workstation hardware running W2k server could handle SUS just
fine...

I run SUS on two AD domain controllers and have never experienced any
problems. The only mention of running SUS on a DC (per Microsoft's
deployment White Paper) is that SUS/SP1 has been updated to allow it to be
installed on a SBS DC.
