Windows Updates Keep Failing After upgrade from XP Home SP2 to XP

Hello,

I have a small problem that is driving me nuts; I hope somebody has a
solution. Here it is: Windows Updates Keep Failing After upgrade from XP Home
SP2 to XP Pro SP2 and the only up grade that is showing is Windows Installer
3.1 all of the other 89 updates keep failing. This is on a New Dell Vostro
200 Core 2 DUO. I had so real erratic behavior with this PC over the last 24
hours as well, ie windows opening and closing, freezing up, Internet
Disconnecting and can't be enabled. In my Event Viewer I have seen a few
Event ID 615, Failure Audit. This has to do with IP Sec from what I
understand and there is old MS Article about it; M912023, but I can not find
it at all.

The problem with the DELL was it needed a patch for the Intel Core 2 Duo
processors; Download; WindowsXP-KB936357-v2-x86-ENU.exe
as it is available from Microsoft to download and fix the erratic behavior.
But because of my update problem, my ie Windows keep locking up and opening,
10 ie windows open and quickly close etc. etc. I had to Validate to get the
download and I did but the download would lock up, so I downloaded it from
another PC to a USB memory stick stuck it in the DELL, installed it rebooted
and I had a good working PC again. BUT still can not get updates. HELP PLEASE
!!!

I am also getting this error in my Security Event Logs "IPSec service failed
to get the complete list of network interfaces on the machine. I am on a
Workgroup Network, NO AD. I forgot to add this to the above post.

Search and Search before asking...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Can't figure that out?

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Thank You Shenan Stanley, I used your 1st. step and it worked... After I read
the fix steps it made total sense
but this is the first time this ever happened to me after an upgrade of XP
Home to XP Pro. Once again thank you very much for your help.
