XP Home sp2

A while ago I replaced my hard drive after it crashed. I reinstalled XP home
from the OEM disk and everything was fine. I enabled auto updates and it
began downloading all the necessary updates. I finally got to sp2 and after
downloading and installing the update my computer would not boot up to the
desktop after restarting to complete the installation. It was saying that
windows was unable to start due to a change in the hardware or the software,
and it gave me the option of starting in safe mode, safe mode with
networking, etc. I started in safe mode and uninstalled sp2, and everything
was ok. I really want sp2, any suggestions.

First, if the OEM XP is at least at SP1, why not install SP3 ?
Second, there are 2 log files that probably show where the installation
screwed the pooch, so to speak.
svcpack.log and setupapi.log, which are both located in WINDOWS
