Windows updates don't "take"

I have Windows set for automatic updates, which has worked fine until
now. Recently I was notified there were updates, and I chose Express
Install as usual. The process completed without errors and the system
rebooted. I was again informed there were updates available - bottom
line, I have installed the same updates 3 or 4 times and Windows keeps
informing me that I need to install them. They are:

- Cumulative Security Update for IE7 for Windows XP
- Security update for IE7 for Windows XP
- Security update for for Windows XP

Any ideas? Thanks.

Something probably needs to be installed before these three.
What I don't have the foggiest since the box is not in front
of me.
