Windows Updater

Recently updated a XP unit to SP1 plus all it's updates
and then updated it to Office SP3.

(FYI-- the office SP3 breaks the GroupWise addressbooks.
A GW client reinstall fixes the problem.)

A few days later discovered that the Windows Automatic
Update feature, on the machine mentioned above, is
totally grayed out. I am unable to set it to use any auto
update features.

35 other units have the same patches applied... with the
exception of blowing away the GW address books no
problems encountered. All units are running
similar/common applications, nothing esoteric.

It there a registry hack to cure the problem ( a switch
getting set incorrectly?)... or is it necessary to
uninstall SP1, all patches or just ugh---reformat the
thing and start all over.

(Dell advises the latter).

Thanks.

You need to have the Automatic Updates service running.

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Automatic Updates |
Set Startup type to: Automatic | Apply button | Start button |
Whet it's started | OK | Close Services and....

Start | Run | Type: sysdm.cpl | OK |
Automatic Updates tab | You have to select the first item to
enable the other options.
