Windows Update

I have a Windows SBS 2003 server with WSUS that isn't working. Is there a
way to have my XP clients download updates from MS automatically without
going through the server?

Thanks,

John

Post forwarded to the WSUS newsgroup so you can deal with the WSUS issue.

Without knowing the specific setup [GPO, etc.] it's difficult advising
you on how to update the workstations.

For the short term, yes, but as soon as the client does a Group Policy
refresh, it'll be back talking to your dysfunctional WSUS Server again.

On the client, in the registry, navigate to
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU and set the
registry value "UseWUServer" to dword:0x0 and restart the Automatic Updates
service.

The client will then execute a detection against Windows Update, and
download all needed updates.

Or, you could just browse to Windows Update from Internet Explorer, and not
even mess with the registry.

Any particular reason you're more interested in doing this at howevermany
individual clients instead of just fixing the WSUS Server?

I haven't been able to solve the WSUS issue, so I was going to see if I
could reasonably bypass updating from the server. I have an anal engineer
that has been harping about his updates not working and I want to get him
off my back. It doesn't matter to me how the updates are downloaded, just
that they are. This is for three client PCs.

I'll try the registry hack and see how it goes.

Thanks for the info.
