Windows Update

Chris

Hello all. I tried this post yesterday, but got no reply
so I'll try again today: Ever since the famous 811493
update, I've chosen to do my updates manually so that I
can pick and chose rather than leaving the computer set
to automatically update with whatever Microsoft decides
to throw at me. Recently, I've encountered a problem
where I can no longer do manual updates. I can click on
the 'windows update' from the Start -> Programs menu,
but when I get to the page to scan computer for updates,
I get a message saying : WINDOWS UPDATE ERROR. WINDOWS
UPDATE HAS ENCOUNTERED AN ERROR AND CANNOT DISPLAY THE
PAGE REQUESTED. SELECT FROM THE FOLLOWING PAGES FOR
INFORMATION ABOUT WINDOWS UPDATE........

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA!!!

It will take time to post a reply to your question of yesterday. Be patient
and if you question does not show up with an answer with a few day, then
your could ask your question again. People that may be able to answer you
are not living in this newsgroup. They will show up and see if they could
answer you.

Are you using a legitimate copy of XP? If you are not,
then I'm afraid you can't apply some, but not all, of the
updates..

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot supply the requested
page; Cannot Display Page (Windows XP)
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/#Problem reaching Windows Update

This may occur if Service Pack 1 has been removed from the computer either
through System
Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory. You may see
a page that states that the Web page has an unexpected error or cannot
display the page that was requested.

Resolution
The value for the CSDVersion in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry,
follow the instructions below.
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK."
3. Browse in the left frame to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click this
key.
5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK."
6. Restart the computer.
