Windows Update will not work for me

D

delcash

I update windows manually (not auto updates) and last night I tried to
update (it's been a while) ... but I tried several times and each time the
windows update websote scans my computer and then this error message pops up:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help solve the problem."

I tried several of the "options below" and none worked. Can someone please
help me update windows?

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Why has it "been a while"?

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page" error message when you try to install an update:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883614

However, there is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of
a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

I carried on as afar as I could ... until the next step where the link said
do not post here until you have installed all updates (which is what I was
trying to do) ... I could not go on...

....I spoke at long length witha level-2 tech at Microsoft and he gradually
and methodically resoolved the problem ... seems a copule of files were
corrupted. So problem is solved. And I have no malware etc.

That's not what the instructions at
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=4075 said. (I know because I wrote
them.) Not making an effort to keep the machine fully-patched prior to
getting infected and not being able to install updates after getting
infected are not the same things.
...And I have no malware etc.

Uh-huh... What caused the problem? How do you know that the problem isn't
going to return after the next reboot?

The problem was caused by a few XP files that had been corrupted. They have
been fixed by the microsoft tech. It took about 3 hours of going over various
steps to locate the root of the rpoblem. We rebooted twice after the last fix
and everything is fine now. If else anyone is fortunate enough to reach to a
level 2 Microsoft tech to solve his or her problem, she/he wil see how
capable and nice these people are.
