Windows Update

When ever I attempt to run Windows Update I get the error message - Windows
could not search for new updates code 80080005. I am running Vista Home
Premium RC2 and a Liksys WRT54GS router. Other Internet access works fine. I
also discovered that Defender gets a similar error message when trying to
update. Does anyone have any ideas?

Charlie,

1. Make sure Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running.
2. Take a look at Automatic Updates client log file
c:\windows\windowsupdate.log. It may give you a clue on what exactly is
wrong.
3. Event Logs also are a good place to take a look for additional
information.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Background Intellligent Transfer Service is running. I checked the Automatic
Updates log file and it listed this error - Cannot load updates because AU
service is not available. I couldn't find a AU service to turn on. I don't
know what it means but I don't think it's good. I also checked the event
logs and found an error loged about Service Control Manager Eventlog
Provider. I don't know if this is relative to the problem but I also noticed
while reviewing what services were running that the wuauserv had a
description of "Failed to read description Error Code 998" Does this provide
anyone any insite as to what is going on?

Charlie,

Sounds like Automatic Updates service configuration got corrupted since
wuauserv service *IS* Automatic Updates service and error you mentioned
seems to be related to the Service Control Manager not being able to read
some of AU service's configuration data.

If you can remember the exact moment you started having problems with
Windows Update, you can use System Restore to revert your system to earlier
state.

There's also standalone Windows Update Client installation package available
to download from Microsoft web site but I'm not sure if it is
Vista-compatible.

Hi,
It sounds like Windows update service is not able to start due to some
reason.

To investigate further, can you please reply with the contents of
C:\windows\windowsupdate.log?

Also, please open a command prompt as Administrator, run the following
commands and send me the output
sc qc wuauserv
sc query wuauserv

Hi,

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as outlined in preivous
posts. This is just-installed copy of Windows Vista Home Premium.

Can I ask for the following results to be interpreted please?

I installed a week ago Vista Ultimate & have been concerned that I'm still
showing no updates available including extras.

Check that you are opted in to Automatic Updates. Control Panel > System
and Maintenance > Windows Update, Turn automatic updating on or off.
Confirm that Automatic Update is enabled.

Have you tried a manual check for updates? You might want to look at the
WindowsUpdate.log in your Windows folder. That may give an indication of
any errors.

Hi,

I have a similar problem and have done the following analysis. Both
WindowsUpadte in the Control Panel as well as Windows Defender claims to be
up-to-date, even though e.g. the Defender definitions file is from June 2006.

windowsupdate.log contains only one line (I just reinstalled from scratch
just to be sure, but I still get the same error)

2007-02-25 16:31:05:267 912 9e0 DtaStor FATAL: DS: 0x80248014: Failed to
find requested service

If I run the commands mentioned in this thread I get the following:

C:\Users\Mikael>sc qc wuauserv
[SC] QueryServiceConfig SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START (DELAYED)
ERROR_CONTROL : 1 NORMAL
BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
LOAD_ORDER_GROUP :
TAG : 0
DISPLAY_NAME : Windows Update
DEPENDENCIES : rpcss
SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

C:\Users\Mikael>sc query wuauserv

SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

Any help or thoughts is greatly appreciated. I'd hate to revert back to XP
due to this.
