Repair Windows Update Service

I cannot update desktop PC. Tray icon states "Windows cannot check for
updates". When I open and click "check for updates", the process either
takes an age that I cancel or, and this is most frequent I get the error
code 80080005 (I've double checked the code is correct). Can some one
please tell me, step by step, how I can repair or re-install the update
service on Vista.

Help appreciated

I've done a bit of research.........

I ran sfc /scannow from elevated cmd prompt.

This failed with " Windows resource protection could not start the repair
service"

Further research suggested checking to ensure Windows Installer (msiserver)
and Windows Module Installer (TrusedInstaller) are enabled.

Both services set to Automatic but stopped. I can start Windows Installer
but Not Windows Module Installer; this fails with "errors code 126: "the
specified module could not be found"

Searched and found Trustedinstaller.exe in C:\windows\servicing folder.
Executing it does nothing (?). There is also a Trustedinstaller.exe.mui in
C:\windows\servicing\en-US but can't open this.

I may be close to problem but don't know how to resolve and close out.

Hope this further info might help. Thanks in anticipation
