Windows Update Error 80072EFD

Morton

Hi,
I'm running Vista Home Premium, SeaMonkey, and I have Defender turned
on, as well as Avast antivirus. I have Windows Update set to go
automatically. What happens is that about half of the important and none
of the optional updates are downloaded and installed automatically. When
I try to do so manually, I get error 80072EFD. I used Google, etc. and
have not found a solution. Can anyone give me a clue as to the problem
and how I can resolve it, as I really want to get the Updates. (I'm
hoping that Windows 7 will be an improvement over Vista.)

Thanks.

Hi Morton,

In most cases these errors are transitory or short lived issues caused
by very slight interruptions in communications between the computer
being updated and the Windows update servers.

You need not to take any action to fix it. wait for one day and it if
does not work...then we can try few registry tweaks to fix it.

Hi Prasath,

Thanks for the helpful reply. Unfortunately, this update problem is not
short lived, but is present for several months. I cannot manually
download any of the Windows updates. On automatic update, about half of
the Important updates, and none of the optional updates, get downloaded.
Vista is bad enough with the updates, and I am concerned about missing
some of the important ones. I'll go over the link's site that you
suggested and hope that something can be done. Some months ago,
Microsoft support promised to send me a Vista Home Premium DVD, but
despite several reminders from me, they never sent it. It is quite
frustrating indeed.

In any event, thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Morton

Alright let's try this step....
Look for UseWUServer under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

double click on UseWUServer and make sure the value is set to 0

One final step...
just try Method 10 from the following link: 'You cannot install some
updates or programs' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798). Instead
of clearing "SoftwareDistribution" folder just Rename it to
SoftwareDistribution.old.

Let me know the status.
Hi Prasath,

Thanks for the further help.
1) I cannot rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to
SoftwareDistribution.old, as it requires permission, and all I get
onscreen is "try again", without success.

2) Trying method 10, there is nothing in the blue small local pane, and
in the items listed in the large pane, there is no Automatic Updates.
Also, I cannot find the Software Distribution folder in that large pane.

Again, I simply do not know what to do next.

Thanks again.

did you boot the computer into safe mode and try renaming folder after
stopping windows update service??

if it does not work then you need to follow method 11 (repair install)
if you have the disc.
Hi,

I could not rename it in safe mode because I could not find it. In
addition, I could not find the Windows Distribution Folder to empty it.
The mystery deepens.
Windows 7 shoyuld be out later this year, and I'm hoping that its
installation will solve this problem of Windows updates, but until then,
I'm at a loss.

Thanks again,

I also noted that Windows Internet Explorer does not work, an dthat my
connection to Windows Update Help site is quickly unconnected. Is there
a pattern here? Are these 3 problems connected?

Thanks.

Hi Again,

Via another group post, I did find and empty my Windows Distribution
Folder. It deleted my update history, but unfortunately the update error
80072EFD persists. I found a post on a restricted web site that says in
part, "I finally got a hold of someone at Microsoft Security. He gave me
a patch or download that put a link on my Windows update window to
search directly from the update website and bypass the sus/wsus issue."
I do not have the password to access that web site, so I do not have
that link. It sounds like getting that link would solve my problem.

Thanks again.

Hi Kernel,

Thank you for your reply. Windows Support twice promised me that they
would send me a Vista Home Premium disc, but they did not, even after
several reminders. I really am concerned about running Vista and not
getting some important updates.

I am trying to fix the exact same problem that my Niece has with her laptop.
Like Morton she also can't get any web pages to appear in either IE or
Mozilla but MSN works and Symantec Live Update works.

Hi Steve--

I must say a lot of the above was a little bit confusing to me, but I think
I'm replying to Steve fixing his neice's laptop.

Try runnng sfc /scannow from the cmd prompt. Make sure you right click
cmd>start>cmd in search>rt. click and choose "run as administrator."

If that doesn't fix her browsing, try fixing winsock.

If those don't work, try a system restore point if one is available.

If those don't work, you might be able to fix it by running startup repair
or one of the methods below.

Startup Repair can fix a large number of components that are broken in
Windows, even though MSFT's teams who made it don't context it as a Windows
fixer when you can boot to Windows. But I use it in this context frequently
to fix people.

Download Vista Repair Disk

How to Use Startup Repair from the Vista DVD or the Repair Disk you make:

1) First try 3 options from Startup Repair. If you have a Vista DVD then
restart with it in the drive>press any key to boot from it and run Startup
Repair. From Startup Repair you have 3 good tools with an excellent chance
of fixing your system. If you don't have a Vista DVD from which to boot to
Startup Repair, no problem, Download the .iso from the link below and
burn it, and you'll have the Microsoft Vista Repair Disk with Startup
Repair.

2) If Startup Repair does not get your Vista back, then use the 3 bootrec
commands from the command prompt available on the Statup Repair Menu:

The menu I refer to is in this set of directions with a grey background.

http://vistahomepremium.windowsreinstall.com/repairstartup/repairstartup.htm

Those are:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuild BCD

3) If my second option doesn't work, then try System restore from the
Startup Repair list.

from it>choose the Upgrade Option>choose your current broken Vista Drive and
try to do a repair install with the Vista DVD.

5) If the above 3 tools don't work, then use the 4 tools available by
restarting your pc and tapping F8 once per second to get to the Windows
Advanced Options Menu.

From this menu click on 3 Safe Mode links to use System Restore. Make sure
you try all 3 if one doesn't work, because just one of them may work. Tap F8
to Reach Windows Advanced Options Menu Pictured Below:

Safe Mode with Command: At the prompt you would type the command to use for
system restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If these 3 tools don't work, you have one more you can try which is Last
Known Good Configuration.

Good luck,

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows
Update or Microsoft Update to install updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
In most cases, these messages are temporary or short-lived issues that are
caused by very slight interruptions in communications between the computer
that is being updated and the Windows update servers. These issues are
generally self-healing. So, before you try the troubleshooting methods in
this article, please exit the Windows Update site, wait 10 to 15 minutes,
start Windows Update again, and then check for updates. You can also let
Windows Automatic Update install the updates on its usual 24-hour cycle.

Thanks for the link Peter. This sounds like something that should have been
corrected in the Beta stage by the developers on the WU team.

Windows Update Error 80072EFD

I recently helped a friend to solve this problem. Here's the solution that seems to work for many people:

Solution (Vista SP 1):

1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click “Command Prompt” Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.
4. Try the update again.

This link also has a good solution; similar to the one above: http://www.walkernews.net/2009/05/14/how-to-fix-windows-update-error-80072efd-in-vista-sp1/

If the above doesn't work, this link has some other solutions:

Hope this helps.

Cheers.
