Windows Update Error 80072EFD

I just upgraded my tablet to Vista Ultimate. Everything seems to work fine
besides Windows Update. I just cannot get it to work. I keep getting the
80072EFD error.
I followed the steps outlined in the help article as well as the KB
(836941). I even tried the guided help from that KB. Just no luck. BITS is
loading automatically as well. I have Windows Live OneCare, but the firewall
is disabled for now.
Any ideas what I could still try?

Thanks,

Patrick Schmid

I tried all the suggestions made in this thread, but without luck :(
Could there be anything left from my XP that is preventing Windows Update
from working correctly?

No. There's nothing of XP leftover when installing
Vista. It's an image based install. Vista is laid down
as new image. It's the same whether you do an upgrade
or clean install.

Yes, but it does reinstall many things from the XP install, and something
reinstalled could certainly cause conflicts.

Yes, that is possible.

For some reason my eyes read, "could there be anything leftover
from my XP's Windows Update." Sorry.

Here's what I should have said:
The Vista OS will be brand new, but there's that possibility when
doing an upgrade, those things that get imported back may cause
a problem.

Thanks, John.

That's usually a symptom of a connectivity problem.
Perhaps it would help for you to describe the connection path?
E.g. one common cause is a misconfigured firewall or proxy server.

Otherwise I think a packet trace would help.
It might even be sufficient just to insert FiddlerTool as a proxy
between IE and whatever is causing the blockage.

Good luck
