Windows Update, 8024400A Error

R

Rick

Windows Update stopped working back on 10/6/06 and reports the error
8024400A. Windows Defender is now showing a Red Security Shield in the
taskbar. The built in help feature doesn't directly support this error
message. The closest it gets is 8024400C. Some people say that this was
fixed with RC2 but I don't see Microsoft offering that as a fix. I was one
of those who blinked and missed the release and retraction of RC2. So, if
RC2 is not an option then how do I fix this problem running RC1 Build 5728?

As far as I am aware, there is no fix other than upgrading to a build of
Vista where this issue has been corrected. At this point that means waiting
until you get the final version. You might try posting in the WU newsgroup
to see if there is a workaround known.

*You* fix the problem. Windows Update is the old version of Update. MSFT
Update released on June 6, 2007. They don't showcase or advertise it well.
It has a better improved BITS--translation updates install faster and
without many of the glitches of the old Windows Update you keep trying to
use by default. Why Vista didn't update to MSFT Update is a great
question. When I asked the IE team the other day in a chat, I got a
ridiculous but typical reply lol "we have our reasons." A lot of children
work at Redmond.

MSFT Update released June 6, 2006 (sorry for the typo). Give it a shot and
see if it helps you. It is avoiding a lot of Errors that the old Windows
Update ran into.

Thanks for the advise. Up till now I can't switch to Microsoft Update
because it has it's own error when I attempt to install it. I even turned
off UAC and put the website in my trusted list and it won't install. It
fails at the point where you should see the active x plug in installation
notice.

Rick--

Not sure what your install error is on MSFT update, but unless it involves
fixing the MSI (Windows Installer and the setup people at Redmond usually go
to Error 1719 MSKB for doing that) try running SFC (System File Checker) and
see if that gives you any help both with the install and/or the Windows
Update error.

SFC (Windows File Protection)

I searched the KB but not a lot of search engines for your error and
didn't find them, but back in the day I used to google for Windows Update
data bases for errors. MSFT has one of those--what it's error remedies
appliations are for Vista are hard for me to say given that Vista may have a
lot of new files in different components and they won't be fleshing out a
lot more than the 60 Vista MKSBs there are until the coming months.
