Windows Update : Error 8024400A (Build 5728)

Schevenels Patrick

Hello.

I have a problem with Windows Update under Windows Vista Build 5728 :
Windows could not search for new updates
Errors found :
Code 8024400A

On internet bulletin boards, some people tell that it's due to an update of
Windows Defender but no one knows how to solve the problem.

Do you have an idea ?

P.S. : Microsoft Update is activated

Thanks

Hi
I think what's happened is that Microsoft have stopped the updates for 5728
now since the release of RC2! I'm only relaying what I've read elsewhere. I
had the same problem therefore I did a lot of research on this problem! If
anyone knows any different maybe they could let both of us know!

Hi Mr. Patrick:
I don't think your update problem is with Vista. I found this info in a
windows update forum:
"Microsoft struggles with Patch Tuesday
By Ina Fried

Microsoft on Tuesday released a slew of patches for Windows and Office, but
a glitch prevented the company from pushing the updates out automatically.

The patches, which include critical fixes for both Office and Windows, can
be manually downloaded from Microsoft's Web site, and the company said it
hopes the more-automated tools will have the patch available later on
Tuesday. Microsoft said that its technical teams "have been working around
the clock" to fix the updating problems.

"Due to technical difficulties experienced on the Microsoft Update platform,
security updates released today are not currently available via Microsoft
Update, Automatic Updates, Windows Server Update Services or Windows Update
v6," the software maker said.

Hope this helps"

I also had problems downloading updates for one of my 2 xp computers that
day. The update worked fine on my month old system but got the same error
message you did for the 1 yr old XP system. A day later the updates
downloaded and installed fine if you haven't already found out.

That problem was "fixed" in 5744. I suspect, although I have absolutely no
proof, that they changed something on the back end of WU that prevents it
from working with 5728 now. I received 6 updates in 5728 before I got that
error msg. I could be barking up the wrong tree, but WU works in builds
after 5728 so I'll stick with my assumption until someone sets me
straight...

WU worked for me today. It installed 25MBs of updates
for Office 2003. I'm using build 5744.

I have the same problem but missed the download of RC2. Does that mean I can
no longer get any updates, drivers, etc. or even reinstall this build (5728)
since I'd then not get the needed drivers that originally downloaded after
the install? I'm still having lots of issues with 5728, enough that I will
not upgrade since I have no way of knowing whether they have been corrected
in the RC2 build.

Or is there a chance that this is a temporary problem with the update site.
Could someone who might know, give an official take on this? Thanks!

I think this is correct. I know it is correct that there is a known issue
with 5728 and WU and that WU works with later builds such as RC2. Since WU
just quit working with no change on the client side, the assumption that
something changed on the WU server that now makes it incompatible with 5728
is the only logical conclusion.

Tom,

Exactly my thinking... but, you know, with so much going on... there might
be some other explanation, but this is the one, as you say, that's makes the
most logical sense. But... enough of the mutal appreciation society stuff...
LOL.

Mine is no official take... doubt very much you'll get one here. Think
you're SOL unless you can get your hands on a later build, whcih at this
point will most likely be RTM and... you'll have to buy it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... (unless, of course, I'm wrong...)

Patrick--

Try switching to MSFT Update which is the newer version that MFST
camouflages that released 15 months ago and among its features is a faster
install versus the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer System)
refrenced/explained in this MSKB. This solves a lot of glitches, problems,
errors with Windows Update.

Microsoft doesn't promote or announce this on their site and it's
unfortunate.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk directly with the IE Team and ask
them why. The ridiculous and smug answer (characteristic of these type
chats unfortunately all to often) was " for lots of reasons." I think that
says it all as to their imperious, elite, effete regard for MSFT customers
or more accurately in my case, people who help out MSFT cutomers
consistently with their products because their phone support is so pathetic.
They contract to Convergys of Ohio for this and it's hard to understand
those particular employees' (not Indians in general) thick accents and in my
opinion they know little about Windows and Office. Part of that is because
they are minimum waged butts in seats outsourced to India and MSFT is
concerned as to public customer support as to how cheap it is, not whether
it has any quality control whatsoever. Try it and see people. Give them a
test question and watch what happens.

For example, tell them you can't find an andministrative account and watch
them tell you to format the box.

This is one topic you won't see anyone with MSFT by their name address
because they are afraid to.

Come on softies--let's here you weigh in!

Chad,

WU is part of Vista. You can not manually go to the
Windows Update site or the all inclusive Microsoft
Products Update site via Internet Explorer. There is
a setting in Vista's Update program that you can check-

<quote>
Use Microsoft Update- You will receive updates for
Windows and other products from Microsoft Update.
</quote>

Have you even used Vista, lately?
