Windows Update

Hello everyone,

I read from the posts here that Windows Update does not work with XPE. Is
that statement still true now? So our only source of updates for the run time
images are the patches released specifically for XPE?

Thanks!

Hi Rei

No.

The QFE for XP-Embedded are especially updates for the database
behind Target Designer to generate Images with the newest components.

But you can update your deployed image over the normal XP-Proffesional QFEs
if you have included all the necessary
installer components.

You can also use SMS (System Management Server) or SUS
(System Update Server) to update an deployed image.
Also an special DUA (Device Update Agent) is available in XP-E.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply!

Just to clarify, I had always thought that the desktop updates for XPE are
different from XP Pro, and I download them from the link in the OEM website.
Are they actually the same, or tweaked somehow to suit XPE?

Thanks again!

The desktop QFEs you consume from the XPe Secure OEM site are identical
(with maybe the exception being an embedded license for the XPe one), the
desktop QFEs for Pro and XPe are binary compatible.

To ensure you have the dependencies for the installer mechanism you need to
get the DQI ("desktop qfe installer") macro component from the secure site.
