when I open the auto updates window, the update is
clicked for automatic - fine, but the other options while visible, can't be
clicked - there is like a film over them. I am an administrative user and my
lap top is part of a college domain (network) when I am there. I suspect the
automatic update lock is part of the college security system. Can I override?

Yes, it seems that some domain policies are controlling Automatic Updates functionality, so you should contact domain administrator, you cannot override them locally.
