Windows Update

I have a fresh install of windows xp and I wanted to
update, so I installed the new updater when asked to and
clicked the "scan for updates" button. After no time at
all, a message comes up saying "windows updates has
encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page". Please help me if you can with my problem. Thank
you.

Here's what worked for me.

Enable TLS 1.0 in
I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru
the list) under Security

Actually, that didn't make it work for the other computers on my
network. The real thing that made it work (without even enabling the
TLS) is to add an 's' in the url to make it https:// instead of
http://. When I did this there was a problem with the security
certificate; the name of the certificate does not match the site. After
accepting the certificate of concern, Windows Update worked even when
not connecting to https. This leads me to believe that the certificate
was the cause of the problem in the first place.

The site is microsoft.com yet the certificate is issued to
a248.e.akamai.net.
It is issued by: GTE CyberTrust Root
Valid from 7/24/2003 to 7/24/2004

I find this odd. Perhaps Microsoft is just sub-contracting out it's
site to a host (most likely overseas), but there's still a slim
posibility that a virus could redirect all windows update URL requests
to this akamai.net site with malicious intent.

If anyone gets to the bottom of this, let me know.
