When windows update downloads fixes/updates, is there a default folder that
it uses for the downloaded files? If so, please let me know where?

It will be a hidden file under C:\Windows
You can view hidden files by going to:
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab and scroll down to "Show
hidden Files" and tick the block.
Click Apply and OK
