Windows Update won't update

Every time I reboot, the same updates are available from Windows Update. I
install them, it asks me to restart, I restart, and log back in, and the
same updates are there. Or, I shut down with "Install Updates and Shut
Down". Takes five minutes. I get no errors, although on one reboot after
logging in I think I got a flash of a balloon saying the updates weren't
able to be installed, but I haven't reproduced that (nor catch it if it did
reproduce). Event Viewer doesn't show anything interesting since the end of
my last session after applying updates and beginning of this session where
the updates are still there.

The list of updates that keep looping has grown as more updates have become
available. I have listed them below. I should mention I do have a RAID-0
array on which the Windows directory is installed, plus a third hard drive
for Program Files and bulk storage. Occasionaly with this RAID config I get
a SATA lock-up log in Event Viewer, but it's not often (the computer stalls
up when it does). I don't see how any of that could relate to this problem
of Windows Update not updating, though.

Any ideas?

Jon

Hello Jon,

Try this one, stop AU service, rename softwaredistribution folder to whatever,
start AU service and try again. After it, delete the renamed folder.

Best regards

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Oh, wow, might've found the problem. I decided to try updating just one at a
time, and after rebooting I *did* reproduce the "Update Failed" error, and
got an error code. Tracked it down here:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ad/6bc2a17e827e80d5/ebf906952eb0ce92?lnk=raot

The cause, I suspect, is that my Program Files directory isn't on my 2-drive
RAID array on which Windows is installed (striping RAID for fast boot +
quick-load data + games) but rather on my third drive (big D: drive for
slower or aynchronous miscellaneous stuff), which once detected to be on
another drive causes the updater to bomb out. That's so STUPID that
Microsoft would be limiting on this, arrgh.

Didn't work. After reboot (and seeing the Failed message again), WU said No
Updates Available, but after clicking Check for updates all the same updates
returned.
