there a way i could download all the recent updates and send them to him on a

Hi Paul, get your father to look at the Windows Update log to see if there are any specific errors
for the updates in question.

How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) associated with
the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and paste the error codes into a
new thread on the Windows Update Newsgroup so someone may be able to assist you. On the other hand,
you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the Windows Update
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie KB896688) and
post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Windows Update newsgroup:
Note when posting to the Newsgroup, make sure you mention what operating system and what version as
the Windows Update group deals with multiple systems. This will enable others to assist.

If all else fails-

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want, Click the “Go To
Download Basket†link. Type in or browse to the location where you want the updates saved to and
then Click the “Download Now†button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last time you tried to download the updates and
post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Create a folder on your C drive, for example - C:\temp

Now select the downloads and download to that folder.
