Hi all,

several weeks I'm watching strange behaviour of windows xp automatic updates. The
yellow icon in tray appears, and balloon says the updates are ready to download, so I
choose which to download, but as soon as I confirm, the yellow icon disappears. Time
to time it appears again (without balloon) and disappears in a second or so and
updates are neither downloaded nor installed. I have seen this on more computers
(some have windows xp home and some have professional), and all of them are legal
of course... Though some of the computers are working normally and I don't see much
difference from those not working (they are not same hardware, but software installed
is +- the same)

Do you have any idea what can be wrong?

Thank you for kind reply,
Y.

Updates are not downloaded or the “Automatic Updates” icon does not display the
status of downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service
http://www.support.microsoft.com/kb/910340

To get Windows Update to re-offer updates
Click Start, select Run and then type in: wuauclt.exe /detectnow

I had a similar problem. I noticed the yellow shield appearing in the
taskbar as if it was downloading updates but it stayed at 0% and then
disappeared. I have AU set to download but not install.
I tried a manual search for updates and got an error message, something like
"please check your time and date settings". I knew they were alright but
went through the motions anyway.
Fortunately, the next time I tried, updates were offered. Don't know if the
"Automatic" problem is fixed yet though.

Thank you both for help. I have read that KB, so it looks like normal behaviour. I will wait
yet... ;) My time is +- minute correct (at least for my GMT:) and manual windows update
works ok for me, but I don't like to run internet explorer... I'd be most happy if I could
remove IE completly :)
