register XP

I have a new notebook running XP MCE. While working on it a small yellow
exclamation icon showed up as a balloon on the taskbar saying something
about registering. Unfortunately when I moved towards it, it disappeared
too fast and I could not read it fully.

Does Windows need to be registered on a new PC (I've already downloaded
Windows updates successfully)? How do I find out it my windows needs to be
registered?

Windows does not need to be registered and does not prompt for
registration outside of the initial installation process. The "small
yellow exclamation icon" is probably coming from some OEM-preinstalled
third-party software - or the OEM itself. OEM's preinstall a *lot* of
garbage so cleaning up and optimizing a new computer is one of the
first things one should do.

I have spent the last three days trying to clean up a new laptop. In the
past I just used a OEM and used the number on the bottom of the box.
This would not work. The restore CD had to be used and now the best
I could do was to delete the shortcuts and hide the program files. There
were several trial programs that I could not get rid of. Primarily AOL,
Office 2005, MSWorks, and several AV types. I guess I could have bought
another copy of XP Home and used that number. I just could not see
putting out another $90.
Just a rant sorry.
