Windows update stopped working suddenly

Hi. Two things are happening with Internet Exlorer and
they may be related to each other. The first thing is
that Windows update has stopped working. The page loads
but goes no further. The second thing is that I can't
close IE easily...it hangs and logs an error in the event
log. I can still browse websites, just can't close IE or
get Windows updates suddenly. I am running XP Pro. The
version of IE is:

6.0.2800.1106.xpxp2.030422-1633 with updates:

SP1, Q330994 and Q824145

Does anyone have any suggestions?

To fix the IE problem, download a handy tool from below
URL to repair IE:

http://mvps.org/sramesh2k/utils/IEFix.exe

** Place the Windows XP CD in the CD drive when prompted.
If you are using a OEM version of Windows XP, then
specific the following path:

C:\Windows\i386
