Windows Update RIP?

When I go to Windows Update,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp it says

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software......".

And there it remains and even after 20 minutes does not change. It used to
work just fine and either identify new downloads or confirm I was up to
date. Suggestions?
