Hello,

I have ran windows update on a few laptops here at
work. They are HP Omnibooks XE3's. After completing
windows update the laptops will not boot up. They all get
stuck at the "Windows is starting up..." screen. When I
try to boot up in Safe Mode they hang at a driver called
mup.sys and then I get a blue screen stop error c0000218
hard error.

Thanks for any input!
Sean

Check HP's WWWebsite and/or tech support. They've done this before
(Vectra VL 600 MT and Win2K SP?), and they may have a fix or a "Don't
do that" warning... You may have to restore from your last backup and
do something (remove a program, etc) before applying the patch.

This sounds like your hive is corrupted. You can try to replace the hive
from your %systemroot%\repair directory to your %systemroot%\system32\config
directory. Depending on what hive it says is failing, after the stop error
it should say either system or software. Now when you check in the repair
directory see if there is a regback folder, this is made when you use
ntbackup to create a ERD disk. I would recommend running this everytime you
have successfully rebooted the server, just to copy the hive files.

1) Boot into command console
2) Rename your software or system hive in %systemroot%\system32\config to
software.bad or system.bad
3) Copy the software or system hive from the repair or if you have the
regback folder to the %systemroot%\system32\config
4) Try restarting.

Like I mentioned before running ERD and checking the box that says Also
Backup the Registry to the Repair directory will save the system state.

I figured out what was causing the laptops to stop
responding when windows started up. After applying
Windows Update KB 835732 the HP Omnibook XE3 running
Windows 2000 Pro would not start up. They would get as
far as "Windows is Starting..." and just hang. Booting up
into Safe Mode I discovered that if I uninstalled the
video drivers the laptops would boot up. Once the drivers
where reinstalled the same problem occured. Once
uninstalling KB 835732 the systems boot up fine. I did
some research and apparently there are known issues with
the patch and Windows 2000 Pro, but none that where
relevent to my situation. Is there a Microsoft fix in the
works because there is nothing available on HP's website?

Thank you,
Sean Barton
