Windows update not working

Hello,
while running Windows update,on the first page of it it
said the windows update site was updated and it will now
install new version.I'm asked to click on "update"
button, but after doing so I'm sent back to the same page
and asked to click the same button, thus never actually
getting to the update itself...

Please help-need to download the recent patch but unable
to do so because of the above issue

Thank you

Try the suggestions listed in the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Under:
Software Update page repeatedly displays "Update Now" button.

You can also try manually installing the new site controls:

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:

download our controls from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab

and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps
below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.

2. Click "Open".

3. Select all the files listed.

4. Right click on them and click "Extract."

5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."

6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.

5. Click "Install."
