Windows Update link no longer in Tools Menu

I don't know when or how it happened, but "Windows Update" is no longer
appearing in my Tools menu in Internet Explorer. I can go to the link and it
shows up in the Start Menu. It has simply vanished from the Tools menu of
IE. What got overwritten in what bizarre place in the registry to take it
away?

Take a look also at following registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

to see if you have that key. This key is 'usually' not present. If you do have it, review contents.
It's presence would indicate your system admin applied some group policies. If you are in a company network, do talk with your administrator.

The Windows Update is not normally in the Tools Menu. It's in the "Links"
Toolbar. Be sure your Links Toolbar is checked

Nope, there is no such entry in the registry and still I have no link in the
Tools menu. Any other place such control might be lurking?

Nope, no such key and still no entry in the Tools menu. The only ones I have
there are (Default), CDAutoRun, and NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Anywhere else such a
control might be lurking?

Try HijackThis v1.99.1
http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip).
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.
