IE6 Tools Menu missing Windows Update link

Phil N.

I have 3 machines with IE6-sp1 running on NT4 Workstation.
On all three, the Internet Explorer tools menu does not
show the "Windows Update" link. All 3 machines were set up
by using the same ImageCast imaging software. This is a
minor annoyance, as we can still surf to the
windowsupdate.microsoft.com site and everything works ok,
but I wouldn't mind finding out how to fix the tools menu
on IE6 so that it shows the Windows Update item. Any
suggestions?

Hi Phil,

There are two possibilities.

1. Either the Windows Update sub-menu item is missing
2. Or, it's present, but with a different menu-text

For the 1st case, see if the NoWindowsUpdate restriction is enabled in the
registry:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/441/

For the latter, type this command in Start/Run dialog.

"rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,BrandCleanInstallStubs"
(This also resets the Internet Explorer customizations such as branding,
Titlebar text etc)

Aha! Removing the branding stubs worked. I guess I never
thought to try that because those 3 machines weren't
obviously branded.
Thanks, Phil

I have the same problem, however neither of these
suggestions has fixed mine. Anything else to try ?
