Windows Update Issue

Dear,

My windows update is not working any longer. It has worked flawlessly for 2
year but after the 21/9/2008 updates it has stopped. When I manually go to
the windows update homepage, I am redirected to my default search engine. The
same holds for my AVG updates but on the other hand, my iPOD SW is updating
itself correctly. To me it seems that somehow the windows update information
is incorrect in my system (registry?) and when trying to connect, it is
automatically redirected to my default search engine.

I am working on a XP Media Center Edition 2005, SP2 system (as SP3 cannot be
downloaded for above reason). Currently I am updating my system via downloads
on my work PC and use a USB stick to transfer it to my desktop......

I have tried various things to solve the issue (Hitman Pro3, dial-a-fix) but
nothing seems to fix the issue. Is anyone familiar with the issue and can
tell me how to solve other than a re-install?

Thanks!

As stated in my post, I have ran various malware / virus checks, among others
Hitman Pro3, Ad-aware 6.0, AVG Virusscan, MS Malicious SW removal tool. So I
do not expect it to be an adaware issue.

Moreover, it does not redirect to a malicious page, but redirects to my
default search page as listed in the registry.

Jan:
While I'm surely uncertain the following will resolve your problem, give it
a try since there's nothing to lose and will take only a few moments of your
time...

Start > Run > cmd > OK
Then enter the following commands...
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

(Note the spacing in the commands...)

The above has the effect of stopping the Windows update service; then
re:registering the appropriate file in connection with the Windows update
service; finally restarting the service.

I ran dial-a-fix ( a freeware version ) on my pc that fixed my MS udate
issues. I had the same problem as you.

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
