Windows update icon

Hello,

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all current updates and firewall turned
on. 40 gig HD and 512 Meg RAM with 128 Meg Video Ram.
Here's my problem...
The little yellow shield in the tray that tells you that you have windows
updates ready to download keeps coming up with the same two updates to
download and install. I download and install them and reboot and the little
icon comes back. Same story, second verse. Each time I am told that the
update was successful and when I go to add remove programs it shows both
updates as updated. I have tried doing this update through the windows
update site as well but it keeps coming back as needing the update and my
machine seems unstable as well. It seems to be having critical errors more
than usual. Any clues would be appreciated.

Do not know why the problem exists - however a solution may be: Open icon
to install the updates - select custom installation - clear selected
updates - check option not to present the updates again.

Try Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with
Windows Update.

There is an option to look a History of Updates installed there.
You can also opt for a Custom install. Try downloading and installing
and if it fails look in the Event Viewer logs for Error Reports.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative
Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the
error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using
copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no
further information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the
button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email)
and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from Event Viewer.

To use Windows Update you need to be logged on with
Administrator rights.

Hope this helps.
