Windows Update icon/prompt

I have my windows update configured such that I am notified
for updates. I recently downloaded a list of updates but
I want to see what the updates are before I install.

I've been waiting for the "shield" icon to appear on my
taskbar, but it's been hours. I want to do a system
backup after this update.

Is there a way to force the icon to appear? This has
happened on another computer and it's frustrating!

Visit the Windows Update web site and click on the Custom button. You can select
the updates you wish to install. There's also a good possibility that you'll see
the shield appear while WU is checking to see what updates you require.

Good luck

Only the WGA update appeared and I know there were more that I
downloaded. The shield still hasn't appeared.

First off, if you haven't done so already, you might want to post your question
to this newsgroup, microsoft.public.windowsupdate. Someone there might be more
familiar with the issue you're having.

That said, you might want to go back to the Windows Update web site and check
your update history. It's possible the updates that were downloaded have already
been installed. Note: You can also take a look in Add or Remove Programs. Just
make sure the Show Updates box at the top of the window is checked.

Updates that have been downloaded are stored in this folder.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

FWIW; Along with the usual Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and Outlook
Junk Email Filter, 5 updates to XP Home Edition and 6 updates to XP Professional
were installed on my computers yesterday.

For more information on what updates were available yesterday, take a look at
this web site.

I was not aware of that newsgroup. Thanks... I'll try there.

It shows one update (this is a new computer) and one pending (the WGA
Validation tool)

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

That folder contains 40 updates, one of which is the update that
was installed.

Yes, I did get the 6 updates to my XP pro laptop. Still haven't seen
it for my new computer.

Thanks for your assistance!
