Windows Update gets redirected to Firefox

Recently when I manually attempt to check for windows updates in
Internet Explorer my system opens FireFox and then I'm greeted with the
following message,

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet
Explorer Downloads website."

I can't use IE because I keep getting redirected to FireFox. I
uninstalled FireFox but then I get a message saying "program not found"
(or something like that)

I've ran spybot and don't have any problems and nothing shows up in
mymy anti virus software..

How do I get Windows update to work again?
