Windows Update Failure

Just uploaded a bunch of updates to our Windows XP.
However, now I find that when I try to go to the Updates
function, the program doesn't recognize that we are using
a Windows program and gives us the message "You must be
running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to
use Windows Update." Any suggestions about how to get it
to recognize tht we are using XP? Thanks
