Hi! Please send any helpful solutions to the problem I
have with Windows Update to (e-mail address removed). I have
Windows XP Professional with SP-1 installed. Recently, I
downloaded a version of Evidence Eliminator v.5. I did
not like the program so I uninstalled it off my HDD. When
I go to http://www.windowsupdate.com, I get this error
message:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update."

How do I solve this issue? I think that some
modifications were made to my registry and I would like a
solution. FWIW, I do have a backup of my registry (thank
God) but I am seeking advice before I do anything. Thanks!

Thanks!

Dear Mr. Rogers:

Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I have tried the
solution but it does not solve my problem. I also have
gone through the Knowledge Base and I followed the
directions in article #234272 but it did not solve my
problems. I still keep getting the same error message
when I try to utilize Windows Update. Can you suggest
some more solutions? Thank you.

Hi,

The error message means that the update site cannot access your system and
check for installed updates, nor can it determine that you are running
Windows. This is nearly always due to a firewall problem. You were not
specific about what you tried, but are you sure you disable *all* firewall
utilites? Including the one native to WinXP? Check the advanced tab of your
network connection properties to make sure. If you have or had Norton
Internet Security installed at some point, you may also need to delete a
registry key it leaves behind.
