Windows update client freezes

After installing SP4, my windows update client now freezes
when I try to install Critical updates. The Licensing
Agreement dialog comes up, I click 'Accept'. The download
progress screen comes up, but nothing is ever downloaded.
The progress screen just sits there.
Any ideas?

Have you tried the suggestions in
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ under "Download stops or
freezes. The Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window appears but download
never starts"?
