Windows/Microsoft Update takes 10+ minutes to complete.

when i visit the Update site (either the Windows Update or the
Windows/Office Microsoft Update site), when i click on Express or the Custom
update button, IE sits for over 10 minutes (with the animated green progress
bar) before showing any updates.

Windows 2000 SP4 (installed from a slipstreamed disc)
Pentium MMX 233MHz
96 Megs RAM
4 Gig HD

after waiting forever for the page to load the updates, i did install the
Rollup and all other critical updates, but it still takes forever to check
for updates.

any ideas as to why its doing that?

It is in my experience that the "new" version of the Windows Update site is
just slow. A much faster computer is required for the "new" version to work
quickly than the older version did. To get updates more quickly, I am using
Automatic Updates, which is much faster. What you do is if you keep
automatic updates disabled like I do, I just put it on "notify me but don't
automatically download or install them". Then when I am all done updating,
I just put it back on disabled. And btw, the "new" version of Windows
Update comes with a new version of Automatic Updates.
